Love the financial planning profession? Then lead it! FPSB Seeks Candidates for its 2015 Board of Directors

By Stephen O’Connor, CFP, Stephen O'Connor, CFP2009 Chairperson, Financial Planning Standards Board Ltd.

Each year, when Financial Planning Standards Board Ltd. (FPSB) seeks candidates to serve on its Board of Directors, I get a bit nostalgic. I served on the Board just as the global financial crisis began, and remember how proud I was to learn that those who had worked with a CFP professional were standing firm with their financial strategies. In turbulent times, the global financial planning profession demonstrated its value to consumers, and continues to do so today.

As an FPSB Board member, I had a unique opportunity to observe the growth and success of my profession, and serving on the FPSB Board was one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional career to date. I firmly believe in FPSB’s vision to establish financial planning as a distinct global profession, and I enjoyed working with a talented group of directors and staff to achieve that common vision. Being a CFP professional helped me understand the many issues facing FPSB’s 20-plus member organizations that offer CFP certification around the world. I gained a special appreciation for their passion and demand for excellence.

If you’ve ever had a desire to lead the financial planning profession, I encourage you to submit your name to the FPSB Nominating Committee Coordinator at nominations@fpsb.org, or +1-720-407-1921 by the 25 July deadline. This year, FPSB has one open position for a four-year term on its Board of Directors, starting on 1 April 2015. To be considered, you must:

  • Hold CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER certification and be in good standing with the FPSB member organization that certified them;
  • Demonstrate strategic planning experience while serving on a national or international governing board;
  • Have experience working at a national or international financial services firm;
  • Be able to participate in English-language meetings; and
  • Not be an office bearer with an FPSB member organization while sitting on the FPSB Board of Directors.

In addition, the FPSB Board has indicated a preference for candidates with:

  • Experience in global branding, standards-setting or certification activities; and
  • An international perspective that comes from having lived or worked in multiple countries/territories.

Most important, you must be committed to FPSB’s mission and vision, and if you are proud to be a CFP professional, that part should be easy. As the nonprofit professional standards-setting body for the global financial planning profession, FPSB supports more than 153,000 CFP professionals worldwide, and works to promote the value of financial planning and working with a CFP professional.

My time on the FPSB Board contributed significantly to both my personal and professional development. I am extremely proud to be a part of the FPSB community and deem it a significant privilege to have contributed to the organization’s growth. Now, it’s your turn. Are you ready to lead the financial planning profession?
