5 Clever Tips for Social Media Success

By Martin Iglesias, CFP

I would like to start this blog by stating that I am not an expert in social media, therefore, my intention is not to lecture but to make suggestions and explore new ways to move forward.

When I was a child, I remember hearing the verses of the Spanish poet, Antonio Machado, and often they come back to my mind when I’m about to start something different. He wrote: “Walker, there is no way, the way is made by walking.”

Yet, I would like to share five things I think can be very useful to those who want to succeed in social media:

1) Have an Identity

Wouldn’t it be great if your writing and comments on social media were so unique, both in terms of content and style, that it would be possible for others to identify them as yours? I know this is not an easy thing to do, but it generates tremendous value when done correctly.

2) Post Valuable Information

Try to understand the demand of your audience and, most importantly, only post when you have something valuable or interesting to say or show. It is important to post on a regular basis but simply posting things all the time that aren’t of much value can be very negative, because people will lose interest and stop following you.

3) Be Global

Keep in mind that whatever you write can be read by people around the world with different cultures and ways of seeing life. Try to find points of common interest. This does not mean you have to renounce your origins, but instead show yourself as an ordinary person, with personal origins and influences but with a wide vision of the world.

4) Help People Navigate with Attachments

People on the Internet and social media like to navigate. Help them. Try to be sure that your writings have links and references that allow people to deepen interest in its affairs, or even navigate in parallel by other issues. Try to offer them quotes, attach texts and videos. Become a navigation center.

5) Comment on Other People’s Content

Do not try to produce all the content you post. There are thousands of people around the world producing great content. The difficulty is filtering through the sea of information to find quality content for your audiences. Instead of always writing from scratch, consider choosing a credible article and writing a response with your opinions. This is a very valuable and can give you variety in your social media approach.

There are many recommendations for being successful in social media but as a prudent traveler, I’ll take with me only these five and they will be my companions in this new journey, as well as Antonio Machado’s verses.
